What is an Emotional Trigger?

A trigger is something that activates a memory or flashback which carries the person back to the events of her or his original trauma. Those who experience these incidents would say they have been triggered. The resulting effect is a wave of amplified emotion washing over the victim. Such feelings may include panic, anxiety, sadness, emptiness, or shame. Triggers impact your mental wellness and stability, producing chaos in your mind.

What Causes Triggers?

Everyone experiences triggers since all of us have grown up in an imperfect world where bad things happen. No one reaches adulthood without having experienced emotional pain to some degree. But there are varying levels of emotional trauma. Some adults are carrying around excruciating overwhelming emotions from inexpressible brokenness.

Childhood trauma is often not addressed because the child is not mature enough to express what he or she feels at the time of the incident. So these emotions are buried and forgotten at the cognitive level, yet remain in the subconscious mind. But buried emotion does not go away, it ferments becomes more potent, and often explosive.

When the sufferer is more mature, these feelings will resurface whenever something happens that parallels or reminds the subconscious of the original trauma. Triggers impact your mental wellness and peace of mind. Hence the flashback to previous emotional pain which expresses itself in powerful outbursts of excessive emotion.

Identifying Triggers

Often victims of excessive triggers are unaware that they are dipping into a reservoir of old emotions. They begin to question their level of mental wellness and stability. They fear they are going crazy because their reactions to minor offenses are becoming explosive. Until they make the connection between present emotional pain and childhood trauma, they suffer continuously from amplified responses to circumstances.

The first step toward recovery is in recognizing your triggers.

  • What situations cause you to flashback to childhood trauma?
  • What emotions are you feeling?
  • At what age did you first experience these emotions?
  • Do you have any memories surrounding these feelings?
